The city of Kashi, renowned as the dwelling place of Lord Shiva, houses many extraordinary Shivlings. Among them, the Gauri-Kedareshwar Temple holds special spiritual importance. According to sacred beliefs, having darshan of this Shivling is considered as auspicious as visiting the revered Kedarnath in Uttarakhand.
As per religious legends, King Mandhata of Lord Rama’s lineage was a devout worshipper of Lord Shiva. He would regularly visit Kedarnath and offer khichdi (a sacred food preparation) to the Lord. On Lord Shiva’s instruction, he performed intense penance in Varanasi. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva manifested as a Shivling from the khichdi itself and came to be known as Gauri-Kedareshwar.
The unique Shivling of this temple is composed of two distinct parts, symbolizing the unity of Hari (Vishnu) and Har (Shiva). It is believed that this Shivling not only embodies Gauri and Kedareshwar, but also Mahavishnu, Mahalakshmi, and Goddess Annapurna—since its origin is linked to food (khichdi) offered with devotion.
